Tea for Three at North Coast Repertory Theatre
Three former First Ladies will be sharing secrets in the unforgettably vivid one-woman show, TEA FOR THREE: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty, at North Coast Repertory Theatre.
Written by Eric H. Weinberger and Elaine Bromka, and starring the Emmy Award-winning Ms. Bromka, the play is a witty and intimate re-imagining of three women who suddenly found themselves celebrities- a behind-the-scenes look at Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, and Betty Ford, revealing the personal cost of what Mrs. Nixon called the “hardest unpaid job in the world.”
Weaving in the presidents, social change and politics of the time in a way that appeals to all audience members, Tea for Three has been critically acclaimed for its blend of humor and passion. The New York Times observed, “Good stories…subtle…even silences are filled with emotion.” Other reviewers agreed: “6 out of 5 stars!” (AustinOnStage.com, Austin, TX), “marvelous, poignant” (The Star-Ledger, Newark, N.J.), “fascinating…laced with insight and humor… brilliant acting” (The Record-Review, Katonah, NY), “Perfect. I felt honored, as a man, to be allowed to share this” (KDHX, St Louis, MO) The Daily Record, NJ pronounced, “Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, a liberal or a conservative –and even if you do not like politics – Tea for Three is worth seeing.”

One CSUSM
Together we are #OneCSUSM, raising money for student scholarships which helps close important gaps in aid for our students. For many students, financial support from family is not an option – nearly 70% of our students receive financial aid. Scholarships are a vital component to success, encouraging our students to persist to graduation and experience the sense of pride that comes from earning a degree.
Open to all enrolled students, the General Scholarship supports CSUSM students who experience an array of financial issues that would impede their degree progress. Many are experiencing catastrophic events, like loss of income, the death of a parent, or struggling to meet basic needs. Your gift to the General Scholarship will go to our students who need financial assistance the most.
So many scholarship recipients express how much it means to them knowing that someone they’ve never met wants to see them achieve their goals. Join us and carry the flag for our students on April 4th at www.csusm.edu/onecsusm.
Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical
The West Coast Premiere of “Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical” written by Jonathan Hogue and directed by Kevin “Blax” Burroughs offers a hilarious, fun-filled romp into the supernatural world of the Netflix hit, “Stranger Things” October 4 through October 20. Set in the otherwise sleepy town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 80s, the parody embraces the nostalgia for days when kids were left free to wander around unsupervised – in this case into portals to a hellish upside down world. Featuring songs about how to get the girl, being the third wheel, and adventures, this show is wonderfully silly with a few interdimensional battles and singing demogorgons along the way.

The Spirit of Harriet Tubman at North Coast Repertory Theatre
There are many plays about Harriet Tubman, but none share her entire life story like a visit with THE SPIRIT OF HARRIET TUBMAN. Leslie McCurdy invokes the “spirit” of Harriet Tubman as she portrays the life of the famous Underground Railroad conductor, recreating stories familiar and some rarely told, using words said to have been Harriet Tubman’s own. Through it all, we learn of the faith and conviction that drove Harriet Tubman to follow her dreams as the spirit of the past connects with the present, to inspire her charges to have the courage to do the same in envisioning their future. Called “a powerful, must see performance – the whole family can enjoy.”
“Theatre is at its best when performance intersects reality and resonates with those present. The Spirit of Harriet Tubman is a moving experience, valuable for both its history and its call to continue freedom’s journey.”
-DC Theatre Scene, Washington DC
“A wrenching and ultimately inspiring narrative leavened by humour…riveting…the indisputable talents of Leslie (Lorraine) McCurdy have seen to that.
Janice Kennedy, The Ottawa Citizen
-Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
THE SPIRIT OF HARRIET TUBMAN will run March 25 and 26, 2024 at 7:30pm and March 26 at 2pm. North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach, CA 92075. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Theatre School @ North Coast Rep
The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents the wacky and whimsical musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as its next student production! Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.
Director Benjamin Cole is eager to share the talents of his student cast. “We’re having so much fun in rehearsals preparing for all the improvisation and audience participation,” Cole chuckles. “The show offers a great balance of comedy and touching moments that showcase what our actors are capable of,” he insists. Student Assistant Director Audrey Wilkins adds, “Working with this cast is great, they’re all so talented and they make the show a lot of fun.” The show runs a bustling 100 minutes with one intermission and hopes to win the audience’s approval with laughter. Additional production staff includes Musical Director, Roxas Shepherd; Choreographer, Amy Avnet; Sound Designer, Caleb Foley; Stage Manager, Paul Smith; and Lighting Designer, Liam Sullivan.
