Farm Film and Music Series – San Diego: America’s Wildest City Screening

Angel Mason Broadus July 22, 2025

Join Coastal Roots Farm for an evening of community, live music, and transformative storytelling. Part of our 5-part Farm Film & Music Series, this event invites guests to gather under the stars and engage in inspiring dialogue about regenerative agriculture, environmental justice, and the future of our food systems.

This screening will feature “San Diego: America’s Wildest City.” San Diego is an oasis at the intersection of hostile worlds: the dividing line between the Mojave Desert to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West; the Sierra Mountains to the North and Mexican border to the South. Meet the diverse array of wildlife thriving incongruously in a transformed landscape of manmade wilderness. From the dramatic rituals of grebes and the playful antics of ground squirrels to the thrilling hunts of orcas and the moonlit spawning of grunion, witness nature’s resilience and beauty amidst the urban sprawl.

Harvesting Dreams: Defying the Odds to Achieve the American Dream

Erica Alfaro is an award-winning author, educational advocate and international keynote speaker. In 2019, her graduation photo –– taken in a strawberry field with her farmworker parents –– went viral and made headlines around the world.

Her story has been featured in major media outlets, including CNN, the Huffington Post and Yahoo News. She has received certificates of recognition from the U.S. Assembly and Senate, as well as a letter of recognition from former Vice President Kamala Harris. She has received multiple Latina and business leadership awards, including Constituent of the Month by the House of Representatives and 40 under 40 by Business Street.

Her story was portrayed in the docuseries Cronicas de Univision, and her book, “Harvesting Dreams,” received the International Latino Book Award and the 7th Latino “Book into Movies” award.

In 2023, the County of San Diego proclaimed October 5 as “Erica Alfaro’s Day” and a public mural of her was painted in National City to honor her as a community leader.

Erica’s graduation picture and story are now permanently featured in San Francisco’s Angel Island Immigration Museum.
