Spirit of the Barrio

Spirit of the Barrio

Angel Mason Broadus May 5, 2025

Join us for an inspiring afternoon with Erica Alfaro –– award-winning author, educational advocate and international keynote speaker.

From the fields of adversity to global recognition, Erica’s story of resilience, hope and triumph will leave you uplifted and remind you of the strength within our communities. Be there to hear her story live!

Harvesting Dreams: Defying the Odds to Achieve the American Dream

Erica Alfaro is an award-winning author, educational advocate and international keynote speaker. In 2019, her graduation photo –– taken in a strawberry field with her farmworker parents –– went viral and made headlines around the world.

Her story has been featured in major media outlets, including CNN, the Huffington Post and Yahoo News. She has received certificates of recognition from the U.S. Assembly and Senate, as well as a letter of recognition from former Vice President Kamala Harris. She has received multiple Latina and business leadership awards, including Constituent of the Month by the House of Representatives and 40 under 40 by Business Street.

Her story was portrayed in the docuseries Cronicas de Univision, and her book, “Harvesting Dreams,” received the International Latino Book Award and the 7th Latino “Book into Movies” award.

In 2023, the County of San Diego proclaimed October 5 as “Erica Alfaro’s Day” and a public mural of her was painted in National City to honor her as a community leader.

Erica’s graduation picture and story are now permanently featured in San Francisco’s Angel Island Immigration Museum.

5480 Grand Pacific Dr.
Carlsbad 92008

WORKSHOPS – Attendees select one of two options

Option 1: Cultivating Donors: Inspiring the Ultimate Relationship

Audience: New to experienced development staff, board members and volunteers

Many think fundraising is about asking people for money, but it’s so much more. This workshop will provide a new paradigm that replaces fear with joy in fundraising.

Presenter: Liz Sheahan, Vice President of Development, Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank

Liz oversees all development initiatives for the Food Bank, providing food to 370,000 San Diegans every month. She has worked in hunger relief since 2006 – originally in Wausau, Wisconsin, and then with Society of St. Andrew, a national gleaning organization. She joined the San Diego Food Bank in 2015.

Liz earned a BS in Social Work from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and a master’s degree in Philanthropy & Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She is certified as a Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning. Prior to entering the hunger relief world, she worked in education and hospice.  Liz graduated from LEAD San Diego in 2014. An avid volunteer, Liz has served on the boards of directors for many organizations. She currently serves on the board of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and as Vice Chair of the board for ProduceGood. In addition, she co-chairs the Programs Committee for the North County Philanthropy Council.

Option 2: Organizations that Inspire Generous Gifts

Audience: Mid to Senior level development professionals

Presenter: Rebecca Tseng Smith, Senior Executive Director of Development, University of California San Diego

Rebecca Tseng Smith is a member of the leadership team in university development at UC San Diego. Prior to arriving in La Jolla, she enjoyed a long career in development serving the University of Hawai’i Foundation, Stanford University, Harvard University and Cornell University. The subject that has most interested her in her work is philanthropic motivation; what motivates individuals to make very generous gifts and how can we shape our institutions and practices to inspire and accept this generosity? She chairs CASE’s long-standing conference on this subject “Inspiring the Largest Gifts of a Lifetime.” Rebecca earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s degree in theology at Boston University. She loves to read, travel and hike.
