WORKSHOPS – Attendees select one of two options

Option 1: Cultivating Donors: Inspiring the Ultimate Relationship

Audience: New to experienced development staff, board members and volunteers

Many think fundraising is about asking people for money, but it’s so much more. This workshop will provide a new paradigm that replaces fear with joy in fundraising.

Presenter: Liz Sheahan, Vice President of Development, Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank

Liz oversees all development initiatives for the Food Bank, providing food to 370,000 San Diegans every month. She has worked in hunger relief since 2006 – originally in Wausau, Wisconsin, and then with Society of St. Andrew, a national gleaning organization. She joined the San Diego Food Bank in 2015.

Liz earned a BS in Social Work from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and a master’s degree in Philanthropy & Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She is certified as a Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning. Prior to entering the hunger relief world, she worked in education and hospice.  Liz graduated from LEAD San Diego in 2014. An avid volunteer, Liz has served on the boards of directors for many organizations. She currently serves on the board of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and as Vice Chair of the board for ProduceGood. In addition, she co-chairs the Programs Committee for the North County Philanthropy Council.

Option 2: Organizations that Inspire Generous Gifts

Audience: Mid to Senior level development professionals

Presenter: Rebecca Tseng Smith, Senior Executive Director of Development, University of California San Diego

Rebecca Tseng Smith is a member of the leadership team in university development at UC San Diego. Prior to arriving in La Jolla, she enjoyed a long career in development serving the University of Hawai’i Foundation, Stanford University, Harvard University and Cornell University. The subject that has most interested her in her work is philanthropic motivation; what motivates individuals to make very generous gifts and how can we shape our institutions and practices to inspire and accept this generosity? She chairs CASE’s long-standing conference on this subject “Inspiring the Largest Gifts of a Lifetime.” Rebecca earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s degree in theology at Boston University. She loves to read, travel and hike.

Max Villalobos, COO, Kaiser, and North County Lifeline Board Member

Max Villalobos currently leads Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals operations in North County, as the Chief Operating Officer.  His role includes oversight of Kaiser Permanente’s North County membership growth strategy and delivery system expansion. He is responsible for developing strong partnerships with Kaiser Permanente’s contracted health care partners in the North County. Read more here.

POP Seminar: Communication for Community-Building

How do you share your ideas and inspire others?  During this session, we will be exploring practical spoken and written communication methods to effectively communicate about local issues, build shared understanding among diverse people, and strengthen community connections.  This session features guest speaker, Nathan Young, renowned communications coach, storytelling mentor and founder of Greater Good Storytelling.  Nathan will be teaching us how to harness the power of storytelling for communication that makes an impact.

About the People, Opportunities & Participation (POP) Seminar Series

The People, Opportunities & Participation (POP) Seminar Series is designed to teach essential civic knowledge, valuable skills and cultivate relationships to build engaged community members and impactful civic leaders. Civic-minded folks, active community citizens, community leaders, high school and college students, aspiring candidates, public and nonprofit leaders, businesspeople, and more—this seminar series is for YOU!

Each session covers a different aspect of intergenerational community-building, participation, and civic leadership. Sessions features a guest speaker and includes practical educational content, “hands on” practice, and all materials.

The People, Opportunities & Participation (POP) Seminar Series is being offered to the community FREE of charge through a generous donation from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.

Series Schedule:
Sessions are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month through May from 6-8:30pm at the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults.
