Lagoona Kahuna Clean Up Challenge

Lagoona Kahuna Clean Up Challenge

Angel Mason Broadus March 24, 2025

Get ready for an outdoor adventure that’s fun for the whole family! The Lagoona Kahuna Clean Up Challenge is not your average clean-up—it’s an action-packed competition where families, duos, and individuals come together to help protect the Agua Hedionda Lagoon while having a blast. Grab a kayak, paddleboard, or explore on foot as you race to remove trash and invasive species, all while earning points to compete for the coveted Kahuna Title and a custom paddle!

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Participants will enjoy awesome perks like free ice cream from Handel’s, exclusive event t-shirts, and a delicious lunch—because heroes deserve a treat! Plus, expect surprises, friendly team challenges, and an unforgettable day making a difference in your community.

Last year, our amazing volunteers removed over 4,000 pounds of debris, proving that when we work together, we can create a cleaner, healthier lagoon. Whether you’re looking for a unique way to spend time with your family or want to teach your kids about environmental stewardship, the Lagoona Kahuna Clean Up Challenge is the perfect way to get outside, have fun, and give back.

Sign up now and let’s make waves for a cleaner future! 🌊🐠♻️

Our staff will have check-in ready for you on-site. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes, some form of sun protection (sunscreen or a hat), and bring a water bottle or two! Staff will be providing everything else you will need! After a short orientation and safety talk you will be sent off to remove litter around the area! Staff will sort and dispose of the collected litter and after the cleanup, you can request community service verification in your Community Hub dashboard.

WAIVERS: This event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers, and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a guardian. Please download and print the waiver below, sign, and bring with you to this cleanup. No printer? No problem! We will have waivers at check-in for volunteers. (2) The Nonprofit Institute has invited a wide variety of federal, state and local elected officials who will participate in a discussion of the findings and implications for public policy and funding, as well as community engagement/advocacy needs.

(3) A panel of nonprofit and philanthropic leaders will discuss the findings and implications for public policy and funding, as well as community engagement/advocacy needs.

About The Dashboard and Purpose

The Quality of Life Dashboard measures and benchmarks several environmental and economic trends throughout the region to ensure San Diego County is on a path to greater health, wealth, comfort and sustainability for current and future generations. The purpose of this event is to create a space for nonprofits, government, and community leaders in the San Diego region to come together and learn about the latest findings from the Equinox Quality of Life Dashboard.

The Dashboard also highlights the ways in which local nonprofits, government and businesses are working together to ensure San Diego County is on the right path. This is an opportunity to discuss the implication of findings for advocacy, public policy and investment in the San Diego region.

Storm Drain Stenciling Day

North County Philanthropy Council February 25, 2019

Join Think Blue and I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) on Saturday, March 30th, from 9:30AM-12PM at Liberty Station NTC Park for a special Storm Drain Stenciling Day, featuring chalk art from local artists!

Did you know that storm drains are not connected to the sewer system? That means they are not treated and drain directly into our creeks, bays, lagoons and ultimately the ocean. Litter, debris, and pollutants are swept along with the water into the storm drains, polluting our waterways. Join us by stenciling a pollution prevention message above storm drains around the neighborhood. By doing so, you are educating the public that no pollutants or trash should go down the drains and into the ocean!

This event will feature sidewalk art from local artists at select storm drains throughout Liberty Station! They will be sharing their view on the importance of clean water through colorful chalk art. If you or someone you know would be interested in donating their time and talents to this event as a chalk artist, please contact Carly Keen at ckeen@cleansd.org or (619) 704-2774.

Stencils are available on a first-come first-serve basis. ALL are welcome to join for litter removal throughout the neighborhood!

All volunteers will need a signed waiver from ILACSD, which is available in the link below. Participants under the age of 18 need parent or guardian signatures on their waivers. Any participants under the age of 14 may need adult supervision for stenciling. Join us in our efforts to be zero waste by bringing any reusable items such as water bottles, work gloves, and buckets!

Watershed Warriors: Fallbrook Community Cleanup

North County Philanthropy Council September 4, 2018

Join ILACSD, the Fallbrook Community Center, and the County of San Diego for a litter cleanup in Fallbrook! We will meet at Fallbrook Community Center and pick up trash around the park and surrounding neighborhood to divert litter from the San Luis Rey watershed and preserve the area’s natural beauty!

We will have cleanup supplies and educational exhibits to discuss the impact of trash on our environment. We also provide community service hours and Letters of Appreciation for volunteers. This is a great opportunity for students and families to learn ways to protect our local environment!

We encourage volunteers to bring your own reusable items such as water bottles, work gloves, and buckets to promote zero-waste practices and help us in our mission to have a zero waste, litter free and environmentally engaged San Diego region!
