35 day mile-a-day challenge to bring direct support to dementia families and brain health advocacy to the public.

Registration is now open for the third annual MoveFTT (Move For Their Thoughts)

BEGINS: September 18 through October 22, 2023.

Registration Deadline: Saturday, September 16th!

ABOUT MoveFTT:

You may walk, run, bike, swim…just move! mile a day for 35 days to improve their brain health while helping dementia families feel seen, heard and not alone!

Registration may be as an individual or a team.

Participants pledge $1, $2 or $4 a day and earn their pledge back each day they accomplish at least one consecutive mile.  You may also donate you pledge back to the organization or opt to raise $100 through donations or individual sponsorships and join MoveFTT for free.

As a fundraiser, MoveFTT helps For Their Thoughts® Foundation to improve the lives of dementia caregivers nationwide by providing one-time, necessary financial grants and personalized care navigation to families who otherwise may feel alone and unsupported.

Into the Woods

Open Book Theatre Company presents, Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” as their debut production. This musical is a fun and fresh take on classic storybook tales where characters you know and love meet in the woods on their journey to get their wish. Actors ranging in ages 13-18 can’t wait to perform for your enjoyment!

39th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

This year, our countywide Coastal Cleanup Day returns with 100+ locations for volunteers to choose from, inland and coastal.
I Love A Clean San Diego leads the efforts during the event and is coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy with partnering volunteer organizations to create the largest international cleanup day in San Diego County. Data collected from this event is sent directly into the world’s largest database on marine debris and volunteers get to make a tangible impact in their communities.

Mysteries and Histories

Historian Kristi Hawthorne will present Histories and Mysteries: Legends of Sunken Treasure, a 1-hour program exploring the claims of Dr. Joseph J. Markey for two shows: Friday, July 21 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, July 23 at 2:00 pm at OTC’s Studio 219, 219 N. Coast Highway, downtown Oceanside.

For over 30 years Dr. Joseph J. Markey spoke of Spanish gold buried in the hills of the San Luis Rey Valley for which only he had the map. Later Markey would claim that the Ship Trinidad carrying $10 million of gold sunk off the coast of Oceanside. He “discovered” numerous artifacts, including coins, skeletons and burials sites — but what became of these discoveries? Is there gold waiting to be found? People want to believe, but what is the truth? Was it a hoax?

Improvised Comedy with Penguin Posse

Improv at the Brooks presents another fun evening of fast-paced improvised comedy with “Penguin Posse”! This highly interactive show features seasoned improvisers from American Improv Theatre and Irreverent Improv who use audience suggestions to create unforgettable characters and outrageous moments. The evening will feature a mix of fast-paced games and innovative long form scenes to give audiences side-splitting laughter from start to finish.

Improv Classes at the Brooks

Join in on the fun with improv classes taught by Chicago-trained improv teacher, Chris Shurland! Improv classes will begin on July 18 at 7 pm and will meet every other week at Studio 219 of the Brooks Theater. Classes are free to everyone and every subsequent class is $10! (Please note: Class will not be held on July 4.)

Chris Shurland, the founder of Santa Barbara’s Irreverent Improv, is a Chicago-trained improv teacher and performer currently based in Southern California. Before being a part of several house and independent teams in Chicago, Chris completed the training programs at Second City, iO (formerly ImprovOlympic), and Annoyance Theater and was lucky enough to be trained by some of the nation’s best improv teachers.

Billie! Backstage with Lady Day

The two-act play, written by Synthia L. Hardy and directed by Bryan Rasmussen combines storytelling and song to capture the essence of Billie Holiday’s music and life. In the first act, Holiday prepares for her show while answering the questions of two unseen reporters. Hardy as Holiday entwines her biography and explanations of the inspiration for and history of her music with performances of her popular numbers. Musician Woody Woods joins Hardy on stage as Holiday’s pianist accompanying her through hits including the haunting “Strange Fruit,” as well as “God Bless the Child,” “Good Morning Heartache,” and “Lover Man.”

One of the greatest jazz and blues performers of all time, Holiday unfolds the truth about her turbulent life – combating racism, navigating abusive relationships, and enduring multiple arrests.

In the second act, Hardy embodies Lady Day, (a nickname given to Holiday by musician Lester Young), in a concert of her hits that includes “’Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do” and “Willow, Weep for Me.” Through a voice reminiscent of Holiday’s with its raspy edge and incorporation of crying and wailing, Hardy portrays the iconic artist as simultaneously classy and tough, vulnerable and versatile, hopeful at times and hopeless at others, but most of all, full of heart and sympathy.

Performances are July 28 (Friday) and 29 (Saturday) at 8 pm, and July 30 (Sunday) at 2 pm.

Summer Kick-off with WE

Join Women’s Empowerment International (WE) for a friendraising fundraiser celebrating summer’s start with a backyard, catered BBQ, music, inspiration, connections, conversations, and women’s empowerment. There will be opportunities to learn about WE, our grant partners’ programs, and the empowered women who are served, along with delicious food, drinks, music, and door prizes! You will also be able to browse and purchase products from some of the women entrepreneurs participating in programs with WE grant partners.

The event is hosted by WE Board Member, Landen Villanueva, and her husband, Josh, at their beautiful home in Poway. The address will be sent upon registration. Please note: this is an outdoor event.
