Premier Members Making a Difference: Coastal Community Foundation

Premier Members Making a Difference: Coastal Community Foundation

Monica Martinez June 20, 2024

Thank you to the North County Philanthropy Council and its members for your continued contributions to making San Diego a better place to live for all. What we benefit from most in being an NCPC member is that together, we are stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to tackle the challenges our community faces.

As a community foundation, Coastal Community Foundation has played a crucial role in bringing together stakeholders to drive positive change through philanthropic efforts since 1987. It is our mission to provide a platform for donors, nonprofits, business, and community members to collaborate on initiatives to address local challenges and support community wellbeing and promote environmental sustainability. Our motto is “Live here, Give here!”

By leveraging resources, knowledge and networks, it is our goal to make a significant impact in creating a better, more inclusive community for all residents while also striving to protect and preserve the environment. We do this by:

  • Providing a flexible way for donors with varied philanthropic desires to make a positive difference in areas of interest.
  • Collaborating with individuals, families, and businesses as partners to fulfill their charitable goals and address community needs.
  • Making grants to support nonprofit programs and community projects.
  • Supporting nonprofits in developing strategic giving options with their donor bases.
  • Serving as a resource for philanthropy education and services.
  • Helping professional advisors serve their clients.

Donors who establish funds at Coastal Community Foundation gain a range of benefits tailored to their philanthropic goals and financial circumstances. They have the flexibility to design gift plans aligned with their charitable passions while maximizing tax deductions. Additionally, they receive insights from foundation staff on critical issues and guidance on charitable giving. By joining a charitable community, donors can increase their impact and effectiveness.

This past year, Coastal Community Foundation granted more than $1.46 million in grants (23% increase from the previous year) directly benefiting our community and growing its total assets to over $10 million. The organization enhanced its operational efficiency with significant technology upgrades and relocated to the historic Ecke Family home, reinforcing its commitment to North County San Diego.

Examples of key accomplishments included funding the West PACE Shallow Subsidy Pilot project with a Safe & Stable Housing Fund grant to support senior housing stability, awarding college scholarships to 47 aspiring young adults, our women’s giving circle, Hand to Hand, grew to 82 women learning about nonprofits across the county who funded their good work to empower women and girls to achieve self-sufficiency. We have also undergone significant organizational changes, focusing on capacity building to better serve our donors.

Partnerships with nonprofits like the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) were strengthened in 2023, facilitating strategic growth and long-term financial stability. Looking ahead, CCF is focusing on its strategic impact pillars of education, mental health, housing stability, and expanding community philanthropy to further enhance the quality of life in the region.

Join us for the NCPC Meet the Funders panel on June 28th from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at San Diego Oasis Rancho Bernardo. Connect with key representatives from Coastal Community Foundation, International Community Foundation, and San Diego Foundation.

On October 1st, Coastal Community Foundation is offering a workshop in partnership with Impact Cubed. This workshop, “Unlocking the Mysteries of Community Foundations” aims at providing education on the role and how nonprofits can team up with community foundations to expand donor-giving options and understand terms like Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), stock donations, and gifts of other assets such as real estate, business interests, valuable objects, etc.

We would also love to share with you our 2023 Annual Report. Finally, please also join us on the Farmhouse Lawn for a Coastal Community Foundation benefit concert with Peter Sprague on Sunday, July 28th 4-8 p.m. Get your Tickets HERE; a limited number of lawn seating tickets and table sponsorships are available.

If you want to learn more about how a community foundation can help you to achieve your personal or business philanthropic goals and/or support your nonprofit organization in its capacity building and developing plans for long-term sustainability, and support your donors, please reach out to Lane Kiefaber at lane@coastalfoundation.org.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Social Venture Partners

Monica Martinez June 14, 2024

Are you looking for a way to get involved in your community? Social Venture Partners offers an incredible opportunity to use your skills for good.

San Diego Social Venture Partners (SVP) works to harness the enormous pool of untapped talent among professionals in San Diego for the benefit of nonprofit organizations serving our local community. SVP’s model recognizes that nonprofits have needs much like other businesses — better strategy, robust financial planning, more effective marketing plans, and so much more — but have few places to turn to for support. Indeed, despite the incredible services they provide, nonprofits simply cannot expand or improve without adequate organizational capacity.

SVP recruits and trains dynamic teams of local professionals (“Partners”) to offer pro bono, customized, hands-on support. With SVP’s collaborative support, nonprofits build the organizational strength needed for resiliency, creativity, and sustainability.

In 2023, SVP and its 80+ Partners achieved their most significant community impact to date, collaborating to help 30+ nonprofits addressing important issues such as homelessness, environmental degradation, job training, mental health, and so much more.

Join us and use your talents to help San Diego nonprofits increase their impact.

We all deeply value the tireless work our local nonprofits do to address pressing issues, but finding the right altitude at which to support them can sometimes be a challenge. Many volunteer opportunities require only basic tasks and leave talented individuals no avenue to activate their high-level skills for good. Moreover, nonprofits very often need more than just funding to translate their good intentions into impactful outcomes.

Joining SVP as a Partner will enable you to volunteer at the highest levels of an organization where your time is most valued. In addition, you will develop a network of like-minded individuals while working collaboratively in teams of your peers, all while expanding your knowledge about some of the most pressing issues in our own backyards.

“When I retired from the business sector, I wanted to begin a new chapter that was more community oriented. I was hoping to use my professional experience to support the greater good. SVP provided me with exactly that. I now feel a sense of purpose that I may not have found elsewhere.” – Robert Hill, SVP Partner and retired Deloitte Consulting Global Managing Partner

If you are looking to use your experience to help those on the front lines of service work in our county, apply to be a Partner now. Applications to become an SVP Partner are due July 11, 2024.

Start by attending one of our two upcoming Why SVP info sessions to learn more:

June 18, 4 – 5pm, by Zoom. RSVP Here.

June 20, 10 – 11:15am, Old Town. RSVP Here.

For nonprofits – take your organization to the next level by applying for pro bono consulting support

We are looking for nonprofits at an inflection point for which our support will make the difference in their growth trajectory. Selected nonprofits will receive highly skilled support delivered in deep partnership. Applications for our next round of support are due July 19, 2024.

“Crisis House’s collaboration with SVP was nothing short of transformational. The processes, templates, and guidance provided by SVP infused our entire team with excitement for the future, inspiration to realize our vision, and eagerness for what lies ahead. This pivotal process will propel Crisis House into our next chapter, enhancing our capacity to serve more people in crisis and offer them hope and pathways to a brighter future.” – Kelcie Parra, Executive Director, Crisis House

Meet Our Members: Palomar Family Counseling Service, Inc

Monica Martinez June 11, 2024

It’s been an exciting year! We’ve added new programs & services, expanded our partnerships, and increased our scope & scale.

New programs & services:

Todos Los Ninos (TLN): Grant funded by San Diego Foundation, San Diego Women’s Foundation, and Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund, and operated in partnership with Growing Minds, TLN is a pilot project designed to strengthen the capacity of early childhood education centers to offer high quality programs that include evidence-based preventive mental health interventions to low-income, minority, children and their families.

Screening to Care (S2C): Funded by the County of San Diego, S2C is a school-based initiative offered within Vista Unified School District. Using mySAEBRS screening results, we identify and determine school community and student social-emotional need and connect students to appropriate level of care using the multi-tiered system of supports framework.

New partnerships:

We partnered with the Fallbrook Regional Health District to provide comprehensive mental health services to meet the needs of children, youth, and adults in the district by establishing new and ongoing operations at the Community Wellness Center.

Goals of this pilot project are:

  1. To improve the mental health of our community.
  2. Expand access to affordable, professional services across the continuum of prevention, treatment, and recovery.
  3. Reduce or eliminate the stigmatization of seeking mental health services.

The practice of positive growth:

We were also the recipient of a generous grant from the California Department of Health Care Services to help position PFCS to address the significant behavioral health worker shortage in San Diego County.  In addition to new branding and marketing materials, and revitalized workforce development practices, we are excited to share our new vision and mission:

Vision: We aspire to a future where individuals of all ages have the care, skills, and support they need to contribute to and thrive in communities.

Mission: We empower and uplift individuals of all ages in North San Diego County by providing high-quality mental health services that foster resilience and well-being.

Finally, we are putting the finishing touches on a new three-year strategic plan. Stay tuned!

We’d love you to visit our new Careers Page and check out our latest video featuring some of our amazing therapists.

Meet Our Members: The Elizabeth Hospice

Monica Martinez May 8, 2024

All hospice providers are not the same.
The Elizabeth Hospice, a local independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospice leader, has been and continues to be a community resource for hospice care, palliative care and grief support services to children and adults in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County since 1978.

As a nonprofit hospice, we offer care to everyone in the community; no one in need of services has ever been turned away for financial reasons. We are one of only a few hospice providers in the country to have a dedicated team specializing in care for children diagnosed with advanced serious or terminal illnesses. Our comprehensive grief support services, which include individual counseling and support groups, are open to all community members, regardless of patient affiliation or how their person died.

The Elizabeth Hospice’s caregivers are trained to support veterans, addressing post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, survivor’s guilt, and soul injury. Additionally, our veteran pinning ceremonies honor and thank veterans for their military service.

The clinicians, staff and volunteers of The Elizabeth Hospice pride themselves on delivering high-quality, compassionate care. We earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission, an independent not-for-profit organization that certifies and accredits healthcare institutions across the US. This certification demonstrates our commitment to quality and dedication to excellence.

If you know someone facing the challenges of an advanced severe illness who might benefit from the care and support provided by The Elizabeth Hospice, please encourage them to call 800.797.2050 or visit www.elizabethhospice.org. We’re here to help.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Guajome Schools Foundation

Monica Martinez April 10, 2024

Guajome is new to the NCPC family, but the reason we joined is because we see a tremendous amount of potential by partnering with this organization.  First and foremost, we will be able to learn from like-minded organizations when it comes to supporting those who need it most within our local community.  Additionally, it will allow Guajome to learn from more established organizations when it comes to building the capacity of our own, relatively new, school foundation.  Lastly, we hope to build partnerships with other organizations who are a part of the NCPC community in a way that has long-term benefits for everyone involved.  In the end, we not only feel like Guajome can learn and grow by being a part of the NCPC community, but we will be able to share resources to help others do the same.

Through innovation and excellence, our mission is to inspire and empower all learners to become responsible, critically thinking, compassionate global citizens who approach the world with curiosity, courage, and resolve.

Guajome is a community school that focuses on competency-based learning.  What does that mean?  It means that 70% of our student population resides below the poverty line and over 70% of our students are native Spanish speakers.  Additionally, nearly 20% of our students identify as LGBTQIA+ and we have nearly 90 families that identify as homeless.  Needless to say, many of our students face barriers to accessing their education.  We see it as our responsibility to remove as many of those barriers as possible.  There is a strong focus on English Language Development, ensuring that our students and families are fed and clothed, providing educational opportunities for our families, supporting our stakeholders when they experience difficult moments, providing more before and after school care, and increasing access to health.  These are just a few ways that we try to remove barriers and help gain access to their education.

The next part of this description is the competency-based learning component.  Once barriers are removed, students have access to an innovative education that focuses on skills acquisition as opposed to developing content knowledge.  We are using the content and information to help develop skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem solving amongst our students.  This not only benefits our students who are developing skills and competencies that will lead to success after they graduate, it supports the business community because these students will have transferable skills that will help them grow as well.

The whole year has been a celebration for us as we recognize the organization’s 30th anniversary!  We were one of the first charter schools in the state of California and we have been around for the long haul!  This is a big accomplishment and something we are extremely proud of.  Additionally, in the past six months we have been recognized by the state as a community school, increased academic growth, decreased excessive absences, decreased suspensions, and helped to improve the living conditions for many of our families.  All of this has taken place as we have increased our staffing footprint, provided salary bumps for our staff members, and have spent in a way that is sustainable and responsible so we can avoid major cuts.

Guajome’s yearly showcase event, Stakeholders’ Day, will be taking place on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00am – 1:00pm.  It is an event where we have the opportunity to share with the community what our school has been building over the past year. The event includes student work, student projects and student performances.  Staff, students, parents, and community members all participate in a celebration that recognizes growth and progress as it relates to our organization’s mission.  What makes this year extra special is that we are celebrating our school’s 30th anniversary.  Mark your calendars and come out for a visit and if you would like to learn more about Guajome, then please visit our website at www.guajome.net or email the superintendent at humphreyke@guajome.net.
