Interfaith Community Services has proudly partnered with the North County Philanthropy Council since its inception in the 1980s. Interfaith founder Suzanne Stewart Pohlman shared insight about this collaboration: “The concept was simple and direct: together, we could accomplish far more than any one organization could alone.” Being part of this network has helped us build bridges between communities, uplift one another, and empower nonprofit leaders and professionals through connection and shared knowledge.

Interfaith maintains our commitment to empower and stabilize people in need with comprehensive programs. While nonprofits nationwide face funding challenges, our
partnerships with local city governments, the County of San Diego, and donors enable us to continue working to alleviate poverty in our region.

Our collaboration with the City of Escondido recently allowed us to expand our withdrawal management program, increasing capacity from 11 to 32 beds — nearly tripling the number of individuals we serve. As a result, 393 clients have undergone withdrawal management, compared to the 269 clients in FY 23-25. This impressive 46.1% increase highlights the powerful impact of the expansion, especially considering the grand opening occurred only four months before the end of the fiscal year.

Interfaith’s work is only possible because of the support from our community. A recent
example of that generosity is the transformation of our detox facility, made possible by the Escondido Seventh-day Adventist Church. Their team remodeled the space with bright and uplifting scenery, complete with an ocean mural. This renovation was designed to boost our clients’ spirits, allowing them to focus on recovery in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

On Saturday, August 9, BGCSM will host Flapjacks for Backpacks, an annual pancake breakfast fundraiser and community resource fair that connects more than 1,000 youth and their families with local businesses and nonprofits. The morning features a pancake breakfast benefiting afterschool program scholarships, a backpack and school supply giveaway for kids, and more than 30 booths offering free health screenings, games, and other resources to help families prepare for the new school year.

Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos opened its doors in 1979 at Woodland Park serving several hundred youth members. In 1996, the 16,000 square-foot flagship Clubhouse, the Jennifer Loscher Branch, was opened with a million-dollar operating budget and nearly 1,000 youth members. In 2005, the 6,500 square-foot Teen Center opened to serve high school-aged youth.

The organization’s growth has continued over the years and now serves more than 2,500 children and teens with the addition of a second standalone Clubhouse, the Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation Branch, and 12 extension sites throughout San Marcos on school campuses and within affordable housing communities.

We are excited to share an important development. Beginning August 1, the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego (JCF) and the Leichtag Foundation’s philanthropy team—Impact Cubed—will reunite and integrate their efforts. This collaboration will bring together philanthropic advisory services, educational programs, nonprofit capacity building, and our shared commitment to strengthening the Jewish community, supporting Israel, and addressing critical challenges with greater impact.

This integration builds on JCF’s nearly 60-year track record as a trusted philanthropic leader in San Diego, Israel, and beyond. By joining forces, we will expand our reach, increase our effectiveness, and enhance our role as philanthropic advisors, conveners, and advocates for strategic giving. We will combine our expertise in nonprofit best practices with strong relationships across the Jewish and broader nonprofit landscape to better support donors and organizations alike.

Jeremy Pearl will remain CEO of JCF. Charlene Seidle will join JCF as President and Chief Philanthropy Officer while continuing her leadership at the Leichtag Foundation during its wind-down. Sharleen Wollach, JCF Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer, and Eli Landau, JCF Chief Financial Officer, will continue in their roles alongside Impact Cubed professionals who will join the JCF team.

Assistance League Rancho San Dieguito

Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and adults in our local communities of Encinitas, Cardiff, Solana Beach and Del Mar.  Annually our chapter members volunteer over 25,000 hours and return over $195,000 to our local community through our philanthropic programs.

Our programs include:

Operation School Bell: Clothing children

• Through this program we sponsor shopping events for local school children and their families at a local retail store. The students are chosen by their school district to participate.  Each child has $110 tax-free to spend on clothes and shoes for school. We serve over 1200 local students with this program.
• Back to school event at Camp Pendleton: we work with five other local Assistance Leagues to provide a one-day event at Camp Pendleton for children from military families.  The children receive clothes, hygiene kits, and vouchers for shoes.  Over 500 children are served every year.
• Every March we offer shopping events for the students from the Encinitas Head Start program.  Over 70 children are served.

Surviving After Violence

• Working with Palomar Health, we provide emergency clothing for victims of sexual assault whose clothes are collected as evidence.
• We also provide:
  • Emotional support items like weighted stuffed animals and journals and pens for counselling sessions
  • Life support items like trac phones with one months unlimited minutes, gift cards to local restaurants and Target and Walmart, shoes and backpacks

Preschool English Literacy Program

• Every week our volunteers do reading and math lessons with the four-year-old preschools at the Encinitas Head Start program.

 

Knifty Knitters 

 

• Our volunteers knit baby blankets, sweaters, hats and booties which are donated to Balboa Naval Hospital.
• They also knit scarves for the deployed military personnel.

Flowers for You!

• Local merchants donate flowers, and our members create flower arrangements which are donated to area senior facilities and schools for teachers.

 

Scholarship Program

• Using established criteria, our scholarship committee selects eligible applicants from our five local high schools. Awards starting at $1000 help with college expenses.  Each recipient also has an Assistance League member as a mentor.

One Safe Place

• We partner with One Safe Place, the family justice center in San Marcos.
• We provide donations of emergency clothing for Sharia’s Closet and funds for their therapy programs for children and teenagers for special events, food and craft supplies.

 

 

We also have an auxiliary:  Assisteens.  They are high school students who volunteer at the thrift shop and at our fundraiser.  They have their own volunteer and fundraising activities.

 

ALRSD raises funds through its Thrift Shop at 1542 Encinitas Blvd., Encinitas, fundraising events, individual and corporate donations and community and government grants.  Funds are returned to the community through philanthropic programs that serve children and adults.

Membership is open to everyone.  There are no paid volunteers.

One of SDNEDC’s key objectives is to bring North County closer together. The more we collaborate and cooperate, the more we accomplish—creating something greater than the sum of its parts.

With that goal in mind, SDNEDC and the Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and Oceanside Chambers hosted a very successful study trip to Austin, TX from March 19-21. We focused on the economic and chamber activities in Round Rock, TX, one of America’s fastest-growing suburbs that shares many similarities with North County.

Led by Mayor Rebecca Jones and Councilmembers María Nuñez (San Marcos), Jeff Fox (Vista), and Kevin Shein (Carlsbad), the 20-person delegation took deep dives into topics like:

· How Round Rock organizes its economic development and workforce efforts to increase private and public sector partnerships to drive prosperity.

· How to leverage public sector investment in parks and active open spaces to enhance economic development, connectivity, and quality of life amenities.

· How the brewing industry in Texas is adapting to changing consumer preferences.

· How the success of South by Southwest can be traced to two key goals—meeting a real need to boost activity for local venues during a slow season and fostering creative conversations and connections.

· How Mobile Loaves and Fishes is innovating in providing services to the homeless.

As important as the panels and presentations were, the real impact came from the deepening connections among the trip delegates. Study trips provide a unique opportunity to get away from San Diego and spend quality time with other stewards of our region while honing our North County stories.
