Meet Our Members: Adjoin

Alina March 9, 2023

Adjoin is a California-based nonprofit organization that was founded in 1983 as the North County Career Development Program. Originally created to provide vocational programs for individuals with disabilities exiting high school, Adjoin has since expanded its services to various populations in diverse communities throughout California.

Its primary sources of funding come from the Regional Centers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the State Department of Rehabilitation. In 2011, Adjoin added a new funding source from the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide services to Veteran families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless.

In 1989, Adjoin became the first exclusively community-based program in California to be nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. This year, the organization has expanded its services to include Catalyst Independent Living Services in Orange County, an Art program in Imperial Valley, an educational program called Inflight Skills Academy, and a unique mobile application matching individuals with developmental disabilities to service providers throughout California. For more information on Adjoin’s services and how to donate, visit www.adjoin.org.

March 16 is Adjoin’s Game Night, which supports at-risk veteran families and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Enjoy playing games, food, and drinks while learning more about Adjoin’s services and programs! The proceeds will support operational costs and help us grow.  Click here for more information: Adjoin Game Night

Women Leading Equitable Change Through Social Mobility
A conversation with the presidents leading higher education institutions in North San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 1, 2023 – North County Philanthropy Council is excited to announce its first in-person, quarterly luncheon of 2023. In honor of International Women’s Day, NCPC is hosting the Women Leading Equitable Change in North County Luncheon on March 20, 2023, from 12PM – 2PM, at Cal State University San Marcos.

Moderated by Patricia Prado Olmos, CSUSM Chief Community Engagement Officer, the panel includes the Presidents for all three higher education institutions in North County: CSUSM President Dr. Ellen Neufeldt, Palomar College President Dr. Star Rivera-Lacey, and MiraCosta Community College President Dr. Sunita Cooke. Attendees will join this panel of influential women in higher education leadership as they discuss their journey to uplift our North County community through leveraging community engagement. Conversation themes will focus on the unique challenges women leaders face and how they collaborate across our region to support their institutional missions. It will be a celebration of inclusive leadership and a conversation about the importance of inclusivity and community partnerships to elevate our region.

“As we continue to make justice, diversity, equity and inclusion a through-line in everything we do, we want to recognize the impact that women have when they are in positions of power. We’ve seen a lot of companies and organizations talking about their efforts in driving initiatives that will support a more inclusive and diverse environment, but we still have a long road ahead for our communities to reach equity.” Monica Martinez, Managing Director – North County Philanthropy Council said. “This is why we chose to give these amazing leaders a platform to talk about how the perspective and approach of women can help foster environments that truly drive change in our communities by focusing on equity.” Visit https://ncphilanthropy.org/event/ncpc-luncheon-women-leading-change-in-north-county to learn more or register for the event.

365 Events San Diego on Working with Purpose – Discover Why Engaging Volunteers in 2023 is Crucial for Improving Corporate Culture

According to a survey by Alaya Good, 72% of the next generation of workers said a job where they can make an impact is important to their happiness. As an employer, some of the benefits you can bring to helping your employees find their purpose is undeniable:

  • Engaging the workforce by serving the community through volunteerism
  • Making a positive impact for a common cause
  • Creating a sense of well being among employees
  • Improving brand perception

In 2019, Teresa Miller and Carlen Haag joined forces—with over 30 years of combined experience—to create 365 Events San Diego with hopes of inspiring a strong sense of community through shared experiences. In alignment with NCPC, 365 Events San Diego promotes and strengthens charitable impacts within our communities by connecting corporations with non-profits in need.

“Corporate volunteerism is one of the pillars of—and essential to—a company’s social responsibility program”, say the Co-Founders.

As COVID-19 changed the way the world functioned, corporations saw employee morale and engagement opportunities plummet. Today, corporations are now seeing the need to re-invest in ways to build their teams outside of the office. One of the best ways is through cause-based volunteer service events with a common goal in mind. What better way to re-establish an atmosphere of empowerment and engagement than to volunteer with your team?

365 Events San Diego already works with over 100 organizations that are supporting a variety of causes from homelessness, veterans, foster youth, park revitalization, and so much more. We can create a variety of custom opportunities for companies:

  • Half Day and One Day Service Projects
  • Kids Connect
  • Week of Service
  • Ongoing CSR volunteer programs
  • Corporate functions
  • Nonprofit event management

In 2021, we created 365 Connect, a 501c3 that helps those who are looking to help others and addresses the critical needs of the San Diego Community. Areas of service include:

  • Assisting corporations that have resources and are looking for causes that align with their mission
  • Donor funding
  • Grant research, writing, and management
  • Cause-related marketing and events

Corporate volunteering programs are a powerful tool for fostering happier, healthier workplaces while being a force for good! Let 365 Events SD and NCPC help you make 2023 the best year yet for your employees and your community!

Providing Kids & Teens with the Tools to Build Great Futures

Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos (BGCSM) aims to promote the wellness, health, and success of school-aged youth in the San Marcos community. Driven by its mission to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens, BGCSM offers targeted academic, collaborative, and recreational activities that encourage young learners to become the community’s next generation of responsive, purposeful leaders.

Since its inception in 1979, BGCSM has strived to empower youth to reach their academic and personal goals. More than 20 programs are driven by this goal, working to complement one another in pursuit of three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Citizenship. BGCSM offers comprehensive programming to a diverse community of nearly 4,000 members each year, many of whom are from historically marginalized communities. Tailored to youth from ages 6-18, programs are offered at 12 locations throughout San Marcos, including two standalone Clubhouses, eight school-based sites, and two low-income apartment sites.

In 2022, the organization celebrated the launch of its Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation Branch, a new standalone Clubhouse located in the heart of an affordable housing community. The branch was opened in partnership with the City of San Marcos and now serves an additional 125 elementary school-aged youth each day, furthering the organization’s mission-driven work to expand its footprint and impact on the community.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Council for Supplier Diversity

Alina January 5, 2023

The Council for Supplier Diversity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of using the disciplines of supplier diversity initiatives as an engine for economic empowerment in underrepresented communities. We are dedicated to expanding business opportunities for women, minority, service-disabled veterans, and other business enterprises.

We believe that diverse business development is a key component of reducing poverty, unemployment, increasing wealth, and integrating American society.

The Council is a powerful partner and resource for diverse suppliers to expand and increase their bottom line. We help diverse businesses grow so they can give back and help others. As the businesses we work with grow their capacity, it enables them to support opportunities for others in the underserved community. The Council offers a variety of services to promote supplier diversity and economic equity. Some of the services offered are:

  • Supplier diversity sourcing and sourcing program development
  • Specialized business lending services
  • Supplier development and training programs
  • Office space, conference rooms, and event bookings for meetings, trainings, etc.

Over the years, the Council has established strategic relationships with partners in the community. We work with partners such as San Diego Youth Services, Access Inc., and other local agencies to assist them in their objectives for delivering workforce development and economic sustainability programs for youth and adults. These relationships allow us to leverage the small and diverse business community’s expertise in supporting local programs.

Over the past year, we have put an emphasis on enhancing our relationships with other organizations in the community to provide opportunities for the underserved youth. We have expanded our Young Entrepreneur Academy program this year to support the goals of both the county’s Department of Justice and Office of Education. Our collaboration with the Juvenile Diversion Initiative (JDI) by the DA’s office allows eligible youth the opportunity to attend our Young Entrepreneur Academy as part of the program designed to divert them from the court system. This collaboration gives them additional guidance, mentorship, and support, but most importantly, gets them exposure to the opportunity of business and entrepreneurship as a potential career path.

More recently, we have developed a Financial Support Services team to help small/underserved businesses access the financials they need to grow their businesses and create jobs in the community. This new business lending service gives businesses access to a variety of business credit solutions thanks to our partnerships with lenders who have a special interest in supporting the diverse businesses in our community. Our financial team will work with individuals to tailor an appropriate financial solution based on their businesses’ specific needs. This is possible thanks to the support of our key partners: Union Bank, Civic Community Partners, Mission Driven Finance, and DBE financial firm, Genesis Funding.

We are excited to announce our annual end-of-year fundraiser for the month of December. This fundraiser is a great opportunity to support and get involved with The Council!

The funds generated over this month will help us continue to serve the community by funding programs such as our High Performance Supplier Series and Young Entrepreneur Academy, as well as help us expand our organization’s reach to help provide more opportunities to the diverse businesses in our community.

You can help support the council by visiting our website and making a donation, or if you own a diverse business or know the owner of a business who would benefit from the council’s services, we encourage you to get connected with us and register your business today!
