The Art and Skill of Managing Up with Rhoda Weisman

Join the North County Hub for breakfast with Rhoda Weisman, Dean of the Graduate School in Nonprofit Management at American Jewish University while learning about the effective tool of managing-up. Managing-up is the art and skill of employees attaining the assistance, guidance and resources needed from their superiors to be successful. Managing-up requires professionalism, assertiveness and creativity in devising strategies to attain those solutions. This session will provide opportunities to learn and apply those skills and strategies to real-work situations.

We are offering a unique opportunity for an intimate group coaching session following the breakfast session. Each participant will be given a questionnaire to fill out in advance of the session about a particular struggle or challenge they are experiencing. Rhoda will workshop each participants case with the group. This is an opportunity for expert professional coaching while also learning from your peers. Group size is limited to 12 participants.

Rhoda Weisman is Dean of the Graduate School in Nonprofit Management at the American Jewish University (AJU). In this role, Rhoda takes the helm of the premier, values driven nonprofit MBA program in Southern California with a 32-year old history. The program educates and places the next generations of leaders dedicated to effecting social change through innovation, new skill sets and an ever-growing knowledge base. Graduates progress into higher level leadership positions as well as becoming Executive Directors and C-Suite professionals. Increasingly, they are becoming founders of new organizations that meet pressing social needs of our time. The MBA program caters to working professionals who learn from outstanding faculty who themselves are leaders and change-makers in their fields.

Rhoda specializes in talent and leadership development in the workplace, at all levels. She advises and coaches organizations to hire, train, retain and leverage their best talent, greatly increase their community impact and plan for succession creatively. A recognized expert in “next generation” talent development, Rhoda has been at the forefront of innovation for the Jewish community.

Rhoda was the Founding Executive Director of the Professional Leaders Project (PLP), conceptualized in 2004 to address the talent crisis in the Jewish community. PLP became a model for developing and mentoring next generation leaders and “turning Jewish leadership over to the next generation.” Both the “Wall Street Journal” and the “Los Angeles Times” dubbed her a trendsetter in leadership training and development.

Previously, during more than a decade as Chief Creative Officer at Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, Rhoda envisioned and co-founded 15 national and global ventures for college students, and Gen X and Y alumni. Ventures included the inaugural Hillel Birthright Israel program, Steinhardt Jewish Campus Service Corp, and Campus Leaders Initiative among others. Rhoda coached and trained thousands of professionals, students and volunteer leaders in community building and engagement techniques still utilized and taught today. Graduates from the ventures Rhoda spearheaded are professional/volunteer leaders in Jewish and secular life across the globe.

Residing in Los Angeles, California Rhoda is a dedicated mentor to children, teens and homeless families. She serves as an active board member of several organizations. Rhoda received the prestigious Allan J Kassin Award for outstanding professional achievement, the Bobbi Asimov Mentoring award and is a proud alumnus of the Wexner Heritage Leadership program.
