Premier Members Making a Difference – Social Venture Partners

Premier Members Making a Difference – Social Venture Partners

Ria Custodio July 30, 2020

The following message was written by an NCPC Premier member as part of their benefits of membership. NCPC does not create the content.

During the COVID 19 crisis, Social Venture Partners (SVP) has provided support to the nonprofits in our community that are struggling to adapt their services and meet growing demand at a time of heightened uncertainty. We have also provided a highly strategic avenue for concerned individuals to contribute their expertise and time to our community.

What is your Mission?

SVP believes our best community solutions will come from a strong and effective nonprofit sector. That’s why we are committed to building their capacity to create real, transformative change.

It is our mission to cause community-level impact by empowering individuals and organizations to accelerate positive social change. We do this by supporting the missions of local nonprofit organizations with our quality, truly customized, capacity-building support. There is no similar place for nonprofits to go for pro-bono help with their business-related questions. Likewise, there is no similar place for individuals who want to make an outsized difference with the full range of skills, tools, and connections at their disposal.

How do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

The cross-sectoral nature of NCPC is great! We’re able to connect with individuals, businesses and organizations all bringing different tools to the table. Interesting conversations happen at the intersection, and NCPC has made those conversations possible!

What do you offer to the community?

One of 40 affiliate offices around the world, San Diego Social Venture Partners combines the power of giving with the impact of strong business practice. Our members, called “Partners” improve the quality of life in San Diego by providing pro-bono consulting services to nonprofits that strengthens their organizations. As a result, they better serve the community. Along the way, our members get as much out of the experience as they give.

Individuals who want to give effectively and volunteer strategically can become a Partner at SVP. Partners’ skills and interests are matched with nonprofit requests, and we have a lot of fun making a difference together!  Learn more about joining here, and to begin the process, send an email to sierra@sdsvp.org and express your interest.

Nonprofits that would like support to strengthen their organizational capacity can request a Spark Team by filling out a form on our website here. They will be contacted by a member of our team, and if SVP Partners have the skills and availability to help, we’ll develop a scope of work and team to help.

Finally, each year, we solicit grant proposals from nonprofits working in selected issue areas. Our Partners will select two nonprofits and give each at least $20,000 unrestricted giving over a two-year period. Grants are just the beginning. Selected nonprofits also receive a team of SVP Partners that provide volunteer capacity-building support for at least two years.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

We’re very proud that we pivoted our services in this time of need and are able to respond to an increased number of nonprofit requests for support.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

We have an orientation for new Partners scheduled for early October so there is still time to join and kick off with the rest of this cohort.

Nonprofits that need pro-bono consulting support to grow their organizational capacity can request a Spark Team here.

With its launch of the Impact Investment Pool in 2017, JCF became the first Jewish community foundation to offer donors impact investing options, with several investments being made right here in San Diego. JCF has also been locally recognized for its work supporting other nonprofits in the region, facilitating grant programs and offering educational workshops for organizational staff.

Premier Members Making A Difference – Netzel Grigsby Associates Inc.

Ria Custodio May 4, 2020

The following message was written by an NCPC Premier member as part of their benefits of membership. NCPC does not create the content.

Amid this COVID-19 pandemic and statewide Stay-at-Home mandate, we are providing trusted counsel to our clients and helping them survive and thrive the crisis by adjusting best practices in fundraising.

How long have you been an NCPC member?
Netzel Grigsby Associates has been a Sustaining member since 2014 and upgraded to a Premier member in 2018.

What is your Mission?
Our mission is to help nonprofit organizations and institutions achieve their fullest potential by providing experienced professional organizational and financial development management and counsel, using the highest standards of excellence and ethical practices.

By partnering with nonprofits to advance their missions, we make our own contribution to creating positive change in the lives of others, and in building a better world for us all.

How do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?
As a member of NCPC, our company benefits from networking with all types of organizations, nonprofits, board members, and other corporate entities. We also appreciate the opportunity to share knowledge about philanthropy and working with nonprofits, as well as to strengthen and give back to the profession in North County by serving on the NCPC board.

What do you offer to the community?
Netzel Grigsby Associates is one of the largest and most respected nonprofit consulting firms in the Western United States, with regional offices in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Jose, and Hawaii. We help nonprofits build capacity through expert counsel in fundraising, planning, staffing, and training.

Since 1985, we have partnered with more than 1,100 nonprofits of every size and sector. Our clients include educational, health, and cultural institutions, faith-based groups, and a wide variety of human service, environment and animal welfare, social justice, and youth organizations. Our clients will share that our professional expertise, our ability to create a cost-effective strategy tailored to their organizational culture, and our genuine commitment to their success exceeded their expectations and left their nonprofits stronger.

Our San Diego team members also all serve as board members of nonprofits in the region, guiding them to achieve their missions and maintain fiscal accountability, gaining a richer understanding of the challenges our clients regularly face.

What is something about your organization/company that might surprise people?
Unlike many national and regional firms, our associates are employees, not contract staff, who live and work locally and who have extensive knowledge of the communities we serve. Our staff has more than 250 years of combined consulting experience.

We have a track record of proven results that is one of the strongest in the industry. We have met or exceeded fundraising goals in 98% of our campaigns during both good and challenging economic times, and we have raised more than $3 billion for nonprofits.

What was your organization/companies’ biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

In the past year, our company’s Southwest region completed three major campaigns for the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation, Mission San Luis Rey Parish, and Imperial Valley Food Bank.

Our Southwest regional staff also established new working relationships with Diversionary Theatre, Foundation for the Children of the Californias, Mechanics’ Institute in San Francisco, The San Diego Maritime Museum, Cygnet Theatre, Naval Training Center Foundation, The Children’s Musical Theater in San Jose, Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Sacramento SPCA, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and Truckee Meadows Community College Foundation in Reno.

Blair Search Partners is a retained executive search and recruiting firm, working exclusively with mission-driven organizations of all sizes and sectors. North County Philanthropy Council December 12, 2018

Happy Holidays from the North County Philanthropy Council! Thank you for your support throughout this year as NCPC continued to connect philanthropic and nonprofit leaders to promote and strengthen philanthropy in our community. This year we witnessed significant connections being made at our Luncheons, Connectors and thru our new Mentorship Program. Our year ended with an incredibly inspiring Volunteer Awards Luncheon where 650 community members celebrated volunteers who make this world a better place. I was proud to be a part of being able to thank and recognize 95 volunteers from every sector of nonprofits.

It has been an absolute honor for me to serve as the NCPC Board President these past two years. Thank you for your participation and moreover your commitment and enthusiasm to help achieve the mission of NCPC.

I’m excited to share that the NCPC Board of Directors has elected Shannon Stubblefield of North County Lifeline as our 2019 Board President. Story of Strengthening Philanthropy: Mia Roseberry, Wounded Warrior Homes

North County Philanthropy Council October 4, 2018

Wounded Warrior Homes has been a member of the North County Philanthropy Council for four years, thanks to the generosity of their business sponsor, Jeff Crane, Certified Financial Planner, and his team at Thrivent Financial. Mia regularly attends NCPC Workshops and Luncheons.  As a newcomer to the world of nonprofit management, she has benefited from the information that is shared and the business connections she made.

“One very memorable connection occurred at a networking session just prior to the opening of our third home,” said Mia. “I mentioned that Wounded Warrior Homes had scheduled a cleaning day and was looking for volunteers. To my surprise, John McCoy, President of Oceanside Theatre Company offered to send the theatre’s cleaning service to clean the home and to cover this expense personally.” With John’s support, Wounded Warrior Homes was able to advance their timeline and move veterans into their new homes one week sooner than planned.

Mahogany House Update 5/19/2018 | Oceanside, Ca from Wounded Warrior Homes on Vimeo.

“At NCPC, it’s all about supporting our community,” said Mia. “There’s a spirit of cooperation and a commitment to working together to make life better to the people we serve. NCPC is a great place to meet people who work for causes that touch your heart.”

Mia became the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Wounded Warrior Homes in 2009,  where she was driven by her heart. Her background was in special education, not nonprofit management. But she and her husband Steve noticed that post-9/11 veterans suffering from Posttraumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury were “falling through the cracks” so they felt compelled to take action.

Wounded Warrior Homes was established by Mia and Steve to provide local military heroes with support and supplemental services to help them transition from the front lines to the home front. This nonprofit organization currently houses 13 veterans in its three homes located in Oceanside, Vista and Escondido. In addition to housing, the residents receive help with decisions about advancing their education, finding jobs and managing their finances.
