Meet Our Members: High Five Career Coaching

Meet Our Members: High Five Career Coaching

North County Philanthropy Council August 11, 2022

High Five Career Coaching facilitates transformational individual, team, and organizational success among socially conscious and purpose-driven organizations. Our clients value having a trusted partner and confidante in their corner as they tackle complex challenges. We facilitate open pathways and craft a customized plan for each client’s specific circumstances that enables them to attain sustainable outcomes.

High Five was founded over five years ago by Mike Gellman – an author, coach, devoted dad, and adventurer with 15+ years of experience in nonprofits and Fortune 500 organizations.

Having grown up with a significant hearing loss and often finding himself on the “outside looking in” during his formative years, Mike developed a sensitivity for social service and social justice. He channeled his frustration and energy into a career-long passion for developing the inherent (yet often unrecognized) potential of individuals while creating cultures of inclusion that value and build upon the strengths of diverse professionals.

Guiding Principles & Values

High Five uses a “teach to fish” holistic approach and facilitates a process of client self-discovery, commitment to action, and self-sufficiency. Core principles guiding our work include operating with integrity and excellence, striving for lasting impact, connecting and engaging others, continuous learning and growing, and facing fears with courage to expand beyond one’s comfort zone.

Services & Outcomes

Many clients are surprised to learn that we offer more than just career coaching! We have a diverse team offering comprehensive talent management solutions including: Executive coaching, teambuilding, succession planning, conflict mediation, training, and organizational change.

“It grew into a team that was the best team I have ever had and led in the 18 years that I have been with the company.” – Organizational client

“I even look forward to Mondays now.” – Private coaching client

Meet Our Members: Rancho Coastal Humane Society

North County Philanthropy Council August 11, 2022

At Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS), we create second chances. RCHS finds homes for almost 1,000 dogs, cats and rabbits each year. More than 90% of these companion animals come from shelters that are struggling with overcrowding and high euthanasia rates. To meet the needs of our growing community, RCHS is about to undertake a campus-wide expansion that will build a state-of-the-art medical center, a modern learning center, a pet food storage facility, and a refreshed Welcome Center, which will remain in the same little yellow house where RCHS was founded in 1960.

RCHS is best known for its personalized pet adoption process, where we match the needs of the animal with the desires of the adopter. Our youth programs, including Animal Camp, Kids Community Service and Happy Tales, teach your children responsible pet ownership and co-existence with wildlife. RCHS is also recognized for programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, including the Animal Safehouse Program, the Community Pet Food Bank, Pet-Assisted Therapy and Pet Loss Support programs, Veterinary Care Program for Seniors and other community outreach that provides a “helping paw” to people in crisis. At RCHS, we believe everyone should be able to keep their beloved pets safe, healthy and at home – where all companion animals belong.

RCHS is recognized nationally as a top-rated 4-star charity by Charity Navigator, achieving a perfect 100-point overall score, one of 5 animal shelters in the nation and the only one in Southern California to receive this distinction. RCHS has a Platinum Seal of Transparency through Candid (formerly Guide Star) and charity accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. As a member of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition, RCHS abides by the pledge that NO healthy, treatable animal will ever be euthanized for time or space. As a limited admission shelter, we have time and, thanks to your generous support, funds to address medical and behavioral issues which might have caused a pet to end up in a shelter in the first place. We have no government contracts and are supported only by individual donors, grants and foundations, and, of course, our extraordinary Thrift Shop in Cardiff.

If you would like to learn more about RCHS, please visit SDPets.org. Join us on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at our gala event, Celebration of Second Chances – Unleashing the Magic, to get an insider’s view on the plans to enhance our campus so that we can embrace a future where Every Animal Deserves a Tomorrow®.

North County Philanthropy Council August 5, 2022

What do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

We are incredibly fortunate to have been serving our community here in North County San Diego for the last 60 years. However, the North County Philanthropic Council has helped us come together with hundreds of different organizations and individuals looking to make a difference. Inclusive, diverse, equitable and justice are traits of the utmost value in this council and it understands what is most important today. We greatly appreciate all that the NCPC has done thus far to strengthen the philanthropic impact in our communities.

What is your Mission?

Our mission at the Tri-City Hospital Foundation is to help advance exceptional healthcare in our community by building upon and supporting the most impactful hospital in California. The work is never complete as we consistently push the envelope for what can be done for those that visit our care facilities. At this time, we are finalizing the funding on the redesign of Tri-City Medical Center’s Emergency Care Department. We are honored by those who have come alongside us in this endeavor and look forward to what is next as we continue to advance exceptional healthcare in our community.

What do you offer to the community?

Our hope is that the community sees an organization, infrastructure, and, most importantly, people that care for and hold their patient’s health to the highest standard. Our visitors are friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers that deserve an experience that is unmatched and unparalleled. We can’t wait to offer our redesigned Emergency Care Department and provide updates on future projects and goals we have for our Foundation.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

An accomplishment that we are extremely proud of is finalizing the remaining funds for the redesign of the Tri-City Medical Center Emergency Care Department. This has been a top priority for many months and to see the project coming to fruition is remarkable. This will not only provide an ambiance and aesthetic that our community deserves but it will also reduce wait times and logistical hurdles that existed before. We are extremely grateful to our community of businesses and organizations that helped bring this project to life with their time or financial contribution.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

We are thrilled to be hosting our Jazzy Jubilee – Tri-City Hospital Foundation 41st Annual Gala on November 12th as we return to the beautiful Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. Our musical guest is Grammy Award Winner: Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. All are invited to an evening soiree filled with cocktails and live entertainment where guests can dress in their favorite 1920’s glam or keep it classic for a roaring good time! All proceeds support the redesign of Tri-City Medical Center’s Emergency Care Department. For tickets, sponsorship opportunities, or any questions, please contact our Foundation Office at 760-940-3370.

Have you made a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within your organization/company and if so, how are you demonstrating it?

Our mission is to advance exceptional healthcare in our community. That mission is for all races, ethnicities, genders, and identities that choose us for their healthcare needs. We are thankful that the North County Philanthropic Council shares this view on equality as we all seek to better the lives of those in North County San Diego.

Meet Our Members: Foundation for Developmental Disabilities, Scatena Daniels Communications & VetCTAP

North County Philanthropy Council July 15, 2022

The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities is a nonprofit founded in 1986 and follows the mission to provide support in San Diego and Imperial Counties for individuals with developmental disabilities (and their families), and to raise and distribute monies to promote creative and innovative programs that enhance quality of life when needed services are not available from entities such as government or private resources.

Through the generosity of community partners such as individuals, corporations, and businesses, the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities is able to provide: Funding for innovative community programs; Affordable housing development; Micro-enterprise job development and creation; Emergency assistance for persons with developmental disabilities; Scholarship opportunities for students entering the field of developmental disabilities; and Training opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities and their families.

One of the Foundation’s largest investments came to fruition in February 2022. Our Board of Directors invested $300,000 in the development of Girasol Apartments, in El Centro, CA.

This 56-unit apartment serves low-income Imperial Valley residents who make 45 percent of the average median income. The Foundation’s investment facilitated the project, as well as ensured that 10 units were set aside for individuals living with developmental disabilities. Our Board of Directors were proud to invest in affordable housing in Imperial Valley!

Since July 1, 2021, the Foundation has also provided $159,000 in emergency assistance grants, facilitated through the Case Management department of the San Diego Regional Center. These grants range from $500-$1000 per client to help pay their rent, cover medical costs, and help improve the quality of life for people living with developmental disabilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties. In addition, we have awarded over $230,000 to fund innovative community programs in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We also care about the advancement of those who are planning a career, or presently working in the field of developmental disabilities and are attending colleges in San Diego and Imperial Counties. This year we have provided $46,800 in scholarships to sixteen exceptional students.

Everything the organization invests in and supports in the community is with the vision to help persons with developmental disabilities live full, productive, and satisfying lives as active members of their communities.

VetCTAP is San Diego County’s premier job search skills training organization for senior transitioning military, veterans, and spouses.

Our program improves the lives of those who complete our innovative workshop series (24 hours of interactive training). Participants become more confident, successfully navigate the civilian marketplace, connect with hiring managers via VetCTAP’s network, obtain their career goals, and can then provide for their families. We maintain an 80% employment success rate.

VetCTAP’s program meets the employment needs of active military, veterans, and spouses/partners in three ways.

First, VetCTAP serves the employment needs of a very diverse population.

Second, our program meets the unique needs of our workshop attendees. Participants have a strong military perspective (10+ years in the military) but lack the skills to navigate the civilian job market successfully and compete with “job search savvy” civilians.

Third, we meet the needs of participants by strengthening their self-confidence, helping them cope with stress and self-doubt due to their skills gap.

Participants complete pre- and post-assessments. The results were astounding. Here are a few of our findings from 2020.

  • Pre-program survey: only 35% of participants understood the civilian/corporate hiring process while post-program results indicated 100% of participants.
  • Pre-program survey: only 28% of participants felt certain their resume reflected their marketable skills and would be noticed by an employer vs. 100% post-program surveys.
  • Pre-program survey: only 46% of participants felt confident in their ability to find a new rewarding and enjoyable career of their choice vs. post-program results indicated 100% of participants
  • Pre-program survey: only 10% of participants felt they could negotiate their salary confidently vs. 100% post-program survey results.

Hear from one of our Navy retirees, Steve McClelland, when he first completed the course.

“Prior to VetCTAP, I had all the initiative and good intentions in the world as I launched what I thought were good resumes at a feverish pace toward job postings.  To my dismay, the resumes seemed to go into ‘black holes’ sponsored by corporations and void of feedback.  I was beginning to question if my military skills actually were transferable to “corporate America”.  The dedicated corps of volunteer human resource personnel did an excellent job of providing an exploded view that detailed the intricacy and relationship of each step or tool necessary to be successful in obtaining a job.  I firmly believe that if I had taken this course six months ago, I would already be working in a job oriented toward my long-term career goals.”

Steve is now the Communications Manager at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego.

North County Philanthropy Council May 26, 2022

What do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

As an affiliate who specializes in risk management, it is great to hear the major concerns of nonprofits of all sizes. I use what I have learned to counsel nonprofits on best practices and ideas other organizations are using.

What is your Mission?

I love learning about the great things our community organizations are doing to make San Diego, “America’s Finest City!”

What do you offer to the community?

As a specialist in nonprofit insurance, I assist them in identifying their exposures and offering them solutions to protect themselves against those risks.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

Having merged with Alliant in 2019, I now have the resources of a large national insurance agency without losing the local agent feel. The best of both worlds!

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

Premier Members Making a Difference: San Diego Foundation

North County Philanthropy Council May 18, 2022

What is your Mission?

The San Diego Foundation inspires enduring philanthropy and enables community solutions to improve the quality of life in our region.

What do you offer to the community?

Our strategic priorities include advancing racial and social justice, fostering equity of opportunity, building resilient communities, and delivering world-class philanthropy to realize our vision of just, equitable and resilient communities. We realize this vision through our partnerships and collaboration with our donors and fundholders, civic and business leaders, and our grantees and local nonprofit organizations. For more than 46 years, The Foundation and its donors have granted more than $1.3 billion to support nonprofit organizations strengthening our community.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

Last July, The San Diego Foundation was honored to receive the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships for our work on the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund. The Community Response Fund launched in March 2020 and, thanks to our partners and donors, we were able to grant $67 million through 347 grants to more than 250 nonprofits that delivered 4.14 million services to San Diegans in need during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

We are excited to launch the summer 2022 edition of Level Up SD with San Diego Unified School District and more than 80 nonprofit partners throughout San Diego. Like last summer, students will participate in education enrichment in the morning, then in the afternoons, they’ll be able to participate in enhanced learning opportunities such as traditional summer camps to performing and fine arts, to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities with our nonprofit partners.

Watch an impact video from summer 2021.

Have you made a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within your organization/company and if so, how are you demonstrating it?

The largest demonstration of our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is our Strategic Plan pillar dedicated to advancing racial and social justice. This commitment is evident in our programs such as the Black Community Investment Fund that has raised $3.1 million and granted $3 million to education, employment, entrepreneurship and housing initiatives that increase generational wealth for Black San Diegans. Of these programs, our most visible program in recent months has been our Black Homebuyers Program, which is a partnership with Urban League of San Diego County, LISC San Diego and Union Bank that offers up to $70,000 in first-time homeowner grants to 35 Black San Diegans this fiscal year.
