Meet Our Members: The Century Club of San Diego

North County Philanthropy Council October 12, 2023

What do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

As a member of NCPC, the Century Club appreciates the opportunity to network with nonprofit professionals, corporate partners, and volunteers dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. Additionally, we enjoy the educational resources NCPC offers and/or connects its members to.

What is your mission?

Our mission is to maximize support for the San Diego community and local youth organizations through the operation of San Diego’s annual PGA TOUR golf tournament, the Farmers Insurance Open. Since 1961, the Century Club has used golf as the platform to showcase San Diego to an international audience, generate revenue for the city, and make a difference in our community by creating programs that benefit at-risk and underserved youth charities.

What do you offer to the community?

The Century Club of San Diego, with support from Farmers Insurance, serves its mission by supporting the critical work of our charitable partners, fueling their abilities to enhance the lives of all San Diegans.

The Century Club’s core charitable program is Champions for Youth program, where selected charities receive capacity-building resources designed to further their long-term efforts in achieving their critical missions. Each year, the program culminates with an 8-week fundraising campaign, held from the beginning of December to the day after the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open at the end of January.

Throughout the partnership, charities receive strategic development support, access to donation software, and engage in opportunities of collaboration, volunteerism, and brand exposure.  The charities also earn a partial match of dollars raised, courtesy of Farmers Insurance. Dollars are allocated based on how much they raise and how many donors they have compared to the other participating organizations.

The 2023-2024 Champions for Youth organizations are: Just in Time for Foster Youth, New Haven Youth & Family Services, Promises2Kids, Reality Changers, San Diego Youth Services, Support the Enlisted Project (STEP), and Words Alive.

Through a unique combination of various means of impact, the Century Club supports the Champions for Youth organizations, Pro Kids, First Tee – San Diego and the Armed Services YMCA San Diego in the following ways:

  • Funding – direct and indirect dollars given, whether through donations or by offsetting costs such as covering the credit card processing fees for our partners
  • Expertise – opportunities to leverage the skills, resources, or networks of staff, Members, or Farmers to benefit our partners
  • Volunteer Support – giving our time through service activities to further our partners’ respective missions
  • Unique Experiences – utilizing Tournament experiences or on-course access to expose the youth our charities serve to the game of golf
  • Marketing and PR – leveraging the tournament audience, our collective reputation, and our relationships with media outlets to increase the awareness and brand recognition of our charitable partners

Additionally, as San Diego’s only annual event with a national and international broadcast, the Farmers Insurance Open serves as a valuable marketing asset for the local economy. Each year, the Century Club infuses revenue into the local economy by hiring more than 200 vendors, recruiting more than 1,100 volunteers, and attracting fans from all 50 states and 17 countries, generating a $34.3 million economic impact on the City of San Diego.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

Volunteer registration for the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open, held January 24-27, is now open. Like all PGA TOUR events, the tournament is a volunteer-driven effort with our community of volunteers serving in a variety of essential responsibilities. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to execute the event. Reasons to volunteer include:

  • Be a part of the inner circle of a premiere stop on the PGA TOUR
  • Support an event that helps our economy and local charities
  • Boost your resume with volunteer experience
  • Build lasting friendships and relationships
  • Receive commemorative volunteer apparel

Come out and join in the fun! Visit https://www.farmersinsuranceopen.com/volunteers/ for more information.

The YMCA of San Diego County has been a proud member of the North County Philanthropy Council for many years because of our shared belief in the power of connection for good. With 14 wellness and program branches across San Diego County, plus 3 resident camps, 3 locations dedicated to social services and hundreds of childcare program sites, gymnastics centers and social workers in the field, we are moving forward as a catalyst to transform lives and communities. But none of this can be done without generous supporters and engaging partnerships across government, education, public and private organizations. At the Y, we nurture a healthy spirit, mind, and body so all can thrive while honoring our faith-based heritage. The YMCA of San Diego County was established in 1882 and is the largest YMCA association in the nation serving and employing hundreds of thousands of San Diegans annually.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Interfaith Community Services

North County Philanthropy Council October 6, 2023

What do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

Interfaith Community Services is proud and thankful to be a member of NCPC. We work in partnership with hundreds of diverse faith communities, thousands of supporting donors and volunteers, and dozens of partner community-based organizations. NCPC strengthens our connections and our ability to work in genuine and true partnership to deliver on our mission of helping people help themselves.

What is your Mission?

Interfaith Community Services empowers people in need to stabilize and improve their lives through comprehensive programs, in partnership with diverse faith communities and people of compassion.

What do you offer to the community?

Interfaith Community Services, based in Escondido, CA, plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive support to the most vulnerable residents of San Diego County. Our mission revolves around addressing both immediate needs and long-term transformation for individuals facing poverty and crisis. With a diverse range of 75+ services and programs, Interfaith focuses on five key areas that not only cater to clients’ immediate needs but also empower them to achieve self-sufficiency and active engagement within the community.

The organization’s approach involves intertwining the various services to create a safety net that can be customized for each client’s unique circumstances.

Supportive Services and Basic Needs: Interfaith ensures that essential needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing, are met promptly. This immediate assistance lays the foundation for individuals to work towards stability and improvement.

Recovery & Wellness: The organization recognizes the importance of mental and physical well-being. By offering recovery and wellness programs, they help individuals overcome challenges related to substance abuse, mental health, and overall health.

Homeless Outreach & Shelters: Addressing homelessness is a critical aspect of Interfaith’s work. They provide outreach services to connect with homeless individuals, offering them shelter and a pathway to regain their independence.

Employment & Economic Development: Through job training, skill development, and employment opportunities, Interfaith empowers individuals to gain financial independence and contribute to the community’s workforce.

Housing: Stable housing is essential for long-term well-being. Interfaith assists individuals and families in finding suitable housing solutions, ultimately striving to end homelessness in the region.

The ultimate goal of all these programs is to help clients stabilize their lives, improve their overall well-being, and break free from the cycle of poverty. Interfaith Community Services is deeply committed to making a lasting impact, not only by offering immediate relief but by equipping individuals with the tools and resources they need to become self-sufficient contributors to the community.

By providing a holistic range of services that span both immediate necessities and long-term goals, Interfaith Community Services embodies a comprehensive approach that recognizes the complex challenges faced by those in need. Through their efforts, they are actively working towards ending homelessness, alleviating poverty, and fostering positive change within San Diego County.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

The Abraham & Lillian Turk Recuperative Care Center. Our 106 Bed Facility opened this past May. This short-term residential care is for people experiencing homelessness after being discharged from local hospitals. We have partnered with Palomar Health and Tri City to further our initiatives.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our reader?

Join us for a heartwarming and impactful event that pays tribute to our nation’s heroes while fostering opportunities for their continued success. The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast and Job Fair held at The University Club on November 9th is a unique gathering that combines gratitude with tangible support, benefiting the Interfaith Veterans Services programs.

During the breakfast, attendees will have the privilege of hearing inspiring stories directly from veterans who have bravely served our country. Their personal narratives will serve as a testament to the resilience, courage, and dedication that define the veteran’s experience. Through these shared stories, a deep sense of gratitude will envelop the gathering, fostering an environment of mutual appreciation.

The Job Fair segment is a crucial platform for both veterans seeking meaningful employment and employers looking to harness the unique skills and qualities that veterans bring to the workforce. Representing a wide spectrum of industries, participating companies share a common goal: to offer veterans not just jobs, but fulfilling career opportunities that match their expertise and aspirations.

The synergy between the Veterans Appreciation Breakfast and the Job Fair is remarkable. Attendees witness firsthand the impact of their support as veterans connect with prospective employers, forging paths to meaningful careers. Furthermore, all proceeds from the event contribute to the Interfaith Veterans Services programs, ensuring ongoing assistance and advocacy for veterans in need.

In a world where honoring our veterans does not go beyond a single day, this event serves as a reminder that gratitude can translate into action. The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast and Job Fair is more than just an event; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of service, unity, and the unwavering commitment to those who have safeguarded our freedoms.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Thrivent

North County Philanthropy Council September 28, 2023

Thrivent has been a premier member for the past five years because we wanted to support the nonprofit community in North County. With a small employee matching grant from corporate, for two years we helped cover the membership fee for some new organizations to join NCPC. It’s been great seeing NCPC more than double their membership over the past decade, and become a vital part of North County.

I’m proud of the NCPC meeting in September 2018 where we hosted an Action Team volunteer event. We stuffed nearly 50 backpacks for students with back-to-school materials, much of which was donated by NCPC members. At that same meeting, we met Beth and Brad Thorp, who have become good friends and clients. Covid has changed how involved our local Thrivent team is out in the community, and we look forward to reconnecting with NCPC and other events such as the Wounded Warrior Homes golf tourney, where we recently sponsored and participated.

As the nation’s leading fraternal benefit society, Thrivent provides insurance, investments, and advice to Christians. Thrivent’s mission is to help Christians be wise with money and live generously. My personal mission is to connect good people with great ideas to bless the lives of people in our community. I love helping my clients make wise financial decisions, and it’s gratifying to see them volunteer for projects and support local nonprofits.

One proud accomplishment that happened this year is that a Thrivent member coordinated the 1 millionth Action Team volunteer project. In 2022, Thrivent members performed more than 12 million volunteer hours, and helped to direct more than $60 million through the Thrivent Choice program to nonprofits.

Personally, this year was special as I celebrated my 30th anniversary with Thrivent last November, and my 30th anniversary to my wife Valerie in May.

Premier Members Making a Difference: Neighborhood Healthcare

North County Philanthropy Council September 15, 2023

What do you benefit most from being a member of NCPC?

Neighborhood proudly celebrates its seventh year with NCPC. Our team takes advantage of the unique chance to network with like-minded individuals who share a common passion for social impact. By engaging with fellow professionals and local funders, we foster collaborations, exchange valuable insights, and potentially secure crucial funding for our initiatives. Moreover, NCPC’s emphasis on professional development signifies a commitment to enhancing our skills and knowledge, empowering us to become a more effective advocate for Neighborhood and drive meaningful change in the community.

What is your Mission?

Neighborhood’s mission is to improve the health and happiness of the communities we serve by providing quality care to all, regardless of situation or circumstance. Serving Corona, El Cajon, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hemet, Lakeside, Menifee, Poway, Riverside, Temecula, and Valley Center

What do you offer to the community?

Neighborhood’s core services are Primary Medical Care, Dental Care, Behavioral Health, Women’s Health, Prenatal, Pediatrics, Chiropractic Care, Acupuncture, Podiatry, and specialty resources like Pharmacy, Lab, and Enrollment Services. Individual donations, fundraising gala (typically every September), corporate, and partner support ensure our innovative and forward-thinking programs and services. When we have community partnerships and dedicated donors by our side, we realize we are Better Together.

What was your organization/company’s biggest accomplishment in the past six months – one year?

Neighborhood served more than 436,000 medical, dental, and behavioral health visits for 87,000 people in 2022. We can only do this with the help of generous donors. We offer a range of programs and resources that address the unique barriers our patients face on their road to health and happiness. Financial donations let us open our doors to more patients in need-some of whom have nowhere else to go.

What event/program or campaign do you have coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

With the growing health demands and increasing patient needs, it is imperative that we come together to build a new facility in Lakeside. By investing in this expansion project, we will provide additional exam rooms and dental operatories, hire new staff, and address the pressing healthcare challenges faced by our community. Together we will significantly improve access to quality care, enhance medical services, and positively impact the overall health and well-being (behavioral health) of our community.
