Founded in 2015, Alzheimer’s San Diego serves people impacted by dementia, fighting the stigmas, and supporting research. Alzheimer’s can feel like an impossible disease. But at Alzheimer’s San Diego, we know that people can still live well after a diagnosis. We recognize the dignity of every person living with dementia and empower them to play an active role in planning their future care. We see the heartache this disease inflicts on caregivers, and we are here to give them the support and knowledge they need to become strong care partners – and to find joy in even the darkest moments. With a $3.1M annual budget, 24 employees, and almost 9,000 volunteer hours annually, we proudly serve over 25,000 people each year, offering all programs and services free of charge. Our team is working diligently to make Alzheimer’s a disease of the past, by connecting people to clinical trials and funding research for a cure.

Alzheimer’s San Diego is led by an exceptional leadership team, dedicated to fostering a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and growth. The Director will report directly to the CEO, Eugenia Welch. Eugenia offers over 24 years of executive leadership experience and has led the organization since 2018. Serving people living with dementia has been her lifelong passion, which started when she was 16. Eugenia’s passion and experience have taken the organization to new heights, expanding programs, building partnerships, and diversifying revenue while ensuring that 100% of every dollar raised remains in San Diego County. The Director will join a team of 23 dynamic professionals working collaboratively to shape the organization and support the Alzheimer’s community in San Diego.

The location of this role is hybrid with an office at 3635 Ruffin Road, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92123. This role is required to be on-site 2-3 days per week. Travel across San Diego County is required.
The Director of Education will be responsible for Alzheimer’s San Diego’s comprehensive education programs, serving over 5,200 individuals annually. The Director will be the in-house education expert. They will oversee the planning, delivery, and evaluation of community education classes and workshops, early-stage education programs, private group and community presentations, and professional trainings. Reporting to the CEO and supervising the Senior Dementia Educator and Dementia Educator; this is a highly collaborative role, working with the leadership team to ensure that our education programs align with the organization’s mission, messaging, goals, and fundraising strategy. It is essential that they work effectively on a team and have superb people skills – a compassionate, charismatic leader with exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities. This role is a tremendous opportunity for a dynamic big picture educator who enjoys designing and delivering programs that make an immediate impact. They will have the latitude to be innovative, creating and implementing their vision with the full support of the organization.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as an expert among peers, providing highly effective education programs to individuals with a diagnosis, families, care partners, professionals, and the community.
- Provide leadership and oversight in the development, coordination, promotion, and delivery of education programs and trainings that meet the changing needs of the organization and community.
- Develop innovative strategies to grow the education programs.
- Lead the continuous evaluation and improvement of education program outcomes: attendance, reach among diverse geographic and demographic groups, and program efficacy.
- Partner with leadership to create and implement innovative strategies to increase revenue.
- Develop and maintain collaborative community relationships, particularly among education host sites.
- Maintain high-quality documentation including database entry, metrics, and reporting.
- Serve as a mentor and leader within the Programs team, providing training and support to staff as needed.
- Work with volunteers and members of the Programs and Development teams to coordinate community outreach activities.
- Represent the organization through participation in public events, speaking engagements, and media appearances as needed.
- Demonstrate excellent service skills and effective communication by phone, email, and in person.
- Supervise and supports two full-time employees with education and family support responsibilities.
- Supports, instructs, and supervises graduate-level interns.
- Demonstrated experience in comprehensive curriculum development and delivering community education programs to diverse audiences.
- Excellent verbal, written, and people skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with various internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent business acumen: able to devote attention to both short-term and long-term objectives, effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously and with a keen eye for detail; excellent follow-through and meets deadlines.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, high-energy, innovative team-oriented environment.
