The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans will host this beautiful walk in La Jolla! We’ll be joined by hosts Mary Munk, President, and Abigail Jones, Executive Director, and Dimitri Deheyn, Board Member and Scientific Advisor.
Time & Date: August 23 at 11:30am
Location: 2000 Vallecitos, La Jolla, CA 92037
Meeting Spot: Walter Munk Educational Plaza located adjacent to the boardwalk on the south end of Kellogg Park
Parking Notes: This Google Maps link to the closest parking lot, which you can access from Camino de Oro. Parking may also be available on the street. Please arrive early to allow for plenty of time to park and walk to our meeting point.
Difficulty Level: Easy. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.
Walk Details: We’ll walk ~2 miles total, including a ~1/2 mile walk on the La Jolla Shores Beach sand to Scripps Pier. There will be 200 feet of elevation gain on the pavement as we walk through Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The way back will be downhill on the sidewalk along La Jolla Shores Drive.
You may want to bring a light backpack with a small towel so you can walk barefoot in the sand and put socks & shoes on before we walk on the pavement to go uphill.
We will stop to give you time to switch or put on shoes before we transition to the pavement to walk through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Campus.
As we go, we’ll point out notable locations on the campus such as the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, Coral Reef Garden, IGPP Judith & Walter Munk Lab, IGPP Revelle Lab, and more as we make our way up the hill to Scripps Coastal Meander Trailhead. We’ll head back to THE MAP on La Jolla Shores Drive, a downhill route, visiting the iconic Scripps Crossing Pedestrian Bridge as we go.
