Established in 1987 by local community members who wanted to create a way for donors to make a lasting impact, Coastal Community Foundation has over the past five years granted nearly $4 million to 915 nonprofits and individuals in San Diego County in all areas of service. Our motto at the Coastal Community Foundation is Live Here, Give Here!

What is a community foundation? Community foundations are grant-making organizations that help improve the lives of people in a specific geographic area. They bring together the financial resources of individuals, families, and businesses to support nonprofits in their communities. For more than 35 years, Coastal Community Foundation has been working together with hundreds of donors to enhance the quality of life in North County San Diego by directing philanthropic efforts toward community needs.

We work with our donors to help design gift plans that achieve their philanthropic passions, meet diverse economic situations, and maximize their tax deductions. Donors also engage in briefings on important issues from foundation staff, make site visits to nonprofit organizations, get advice on particular charities, and become part of a charitable community through collective giving efforts. Funds can be established with a wide variety of assets including cash, real estate, stock, and artwork. Gifts come from living donors and through wills.

Coastal Community Foundation fulfills our mission by providing a flexible way for donors with varied philanthropic desires through its services to include setting up Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) in which a donor can contribute assets to their fund at any time and make grant recommendations to the Foundation to support nonprofit organizations or causes of their choice; Field of Interest Funds in which a donor can contribute and participate in grant awards in a focused program area; Designated Funds allowing a donor to support one or more named organizations in perpetuity; Scholarship Funds to benefit students of any age or education level; Agency Funds where other nonprofit organizations can invest their own permanent endowments through the Foundation; Giving Circles (Hand to Hand, Solana Beach Fund, Encinitas Fund, and Giving with Impact) which is comprised of like-minded individuals who combine their gifts into one fund and share in the grant making decisions; and Project Funds can be invested in by community members responding to a campaign initiated by the foundation to meet a community need.

SMART PHILANTHROPY FACT: Did you know with a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)…

• Donors can realize tax benefits in the year the charitable donation is made.
• Donors can contribute appreciated securities to avoid paying capital gains taxes upon sale.
• Assets in a DAF can be invested and grow tax-free.
• Donors have control over the timing of when grants are made (and can be done with anonymity, if desired).
• A DAF could be established as a conduit to gift appreciated securities to small charities that do not have the ability to receive “in-kind” donations of securities.

Recent activities at Coastal Community Foundation we want you to know about:

• We recently made grants through our Mental Health Fund to include the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, Voices for Children, and With Hope, the Amber Craig Memorial Foundation.
• The Solana Beach Fund and its members raised more than $25,000 and was awarded to Community Resource Center to provide critical relocation support to the residents of the Solana Highlands Apartments, in the La Colonia area of Solana Beach, who are being required to vacate their homes due to an imminent redevelopment project. Specifically, residents will be provided with rent, deposit, relocating expenses, transportation assistance, food and nutrition resources, utility assistance, storage and other flexible assistance related to relocation.

• We are currently accepting grant applications for Hand to Hand, a Coastal Community Foundation giving circle, whose mission is to make an impact on the lives of women and girls in San Diego County by directing resources to programs that empower change and self-sufficiency. Focus areas include: 1) education and job training for women, 2) mentoring programs for women and/or girls, 3) programs for women re-entering the workforce, and 4) health and wellness programs for women and girls. Eligibility Requirements and application can be found HERE; deadline is July 10, 2023.

• More than $74,000 has been awarded in scholarships to 50 exceptional youth and young adults in various areas to support their continued education.

• Sharon Omahen, long-time and first Executive Director at Coastal Community Foundation has retired to Sedona and sends her best. We will miss her and thank her for the incredible contributions she has made to our community! We welcome our new Executive Director, Lane Macy Kiefaber, who has an extensive background in philanthropy, nonprofit management, business strategy and nonprofit growth consulting. Lane grew up in North County San Diego and is passionate about helping people achieve their philanthropic goals and support nonprofit organizations in increasing their capacity to achieve their missions.
• Finally, we are excited to report that we have moved our offices to Leichtag Commons, to the Farmhouse. We are truly excited to be immersed in the active community here and welcome the opportunity to run into you on this beautiful campus!
